Infinity Swimming Pool

Fresh Air That Never Ends

Endless Pool

An infinity pool might let you swim forever, but air circulation isn't infinite. Water poses risks to buildings, demanding special care for pool-adjacent spaces.

Evaporating humidity burdens indoor air quality, but a Fresh Air Appliance can mitigate humidity while conserving energy.

SHR 450

This HRV removes the humidity from the exhaust air and tempers the supply air by transferring sensible energy between the air streams.

BPM 08-14

Used for recirculation defrost to intermittently allow indoor air to warm up the plate heat exchanger.

Regulations and Factors

Important to know
  • ASHRAE 62.2 Dictates minimum ventilation rates in specific types of breathing zones.

  • Local Codes May have their own regulations and guidelines but usually adopt ASHRAE 62.2.

  • Compliance and Efficiency Adhering to codes ensures safety and minimizes costs through energy-efficient solutions.

  • Moisture Control To keep those in the pool area comfortable, keeping RH% at or above 50 is ideal.

  • Integration with HVAC System A Fresh Air Appliance can be connected to the air system.

  • Quiet This ventilation system is nestled away wherever the HVAC system is.

  • IAQ Proper ventilation, with suitable equipment, notably enhances indoor air quality.

A natatorium (indoor swimming pool) is one of the most notoriously difficult facilities to design because there are so many critical considerations.

Something Smells Fishy

Chloramine problems

Indoor swimming pools have a smell that most say comes from chlorine. However, chlorine is not distinctly strong enough for humans to smell unless at or above toxic levels. The smell comes when chlorine and organics (sweat, oils, and urine) mix in the water. This smell is known as chloramines, which are volatile.

Other issues that affect the IAQ in indoor swimming pool areas are

  • inadequate outdoor air

  • air stagnation

  • poor air distribution

  • high humidity

  • facility maintenance and operation.

To help occupants breathe better, designers should aim for constant humidity and temperature, along with an abundance of fresh air.

Creating an atmosphere of excellence starts with the air we breathe. Elevate your natatorium designs with our cutting-edge ventilation products, ensuring a breath of fresh innovation for every swimmer's experience.

Keep Indoor Pool Environments Filtered with Fresh Air

What to know

Using a properly sized, light commercial HRV for an indoor swimming pool is ideal for exhausting contaminated air, bringing in fresh, tempered air, and keeping the humidity levels at an acceptable level.

According to the 2022 standard of ASHRAE 62.2, the minimum outdoor air rate required is 0.48 CFM (2.4 L/s). Meaning a 3,000 sq. ft. indoor swimming pool room can achieve this outdoor air rate with a SHR 1400.
