Common Mistakes to Avoid in Radon Testing

In radon testing, minor oversights can compromise accuracy. Let's address these common pitfalls to ensure precise measurements. 

Interference from Airflow  

Positioning radon testing equipment close to open windows, frequently used doors, or open vents can dilute the radon levels detected. Such airflow can disrupt the true representation of radon concentration in the home. 

Weather's Role  

Weather plays a significant role in radon testing. Extraordinary events like storms and strong winds can cause fluctuations in radon levels. Additionally, seasonal variations impact the pressure inside the home, affecting radon concentration. Notably, winter sees higher radon gas presence, making it a crucial period to conduct tests for ensuring safety year-round.

Assuming neighbor radon levels match can be a costly mistake. Radon levels vary between households due to soil composition, and house construction, amongst other factors. Always get independent readings for accurate results from each applicable location. 

Finding the Right Testing Spots

The most accurate readings come from testing the lowest level of the home or living space. Keep these guidelines in mind: 

Equipment Placement

Set up radon testing equipment about 20 inches above the floor and 2 feet below the ceiling, away from objects. Ensure nothing touches or disturbs the device. 

Short-Term vs. Long-Term Tests

If you are doing a short-term test, a radon testing kit should be in this position for 2-7 days, but for more accurate results, conduct a long-term radon test or use a digital radon monitor. 

Testing Frequency

If opting for short-term tests, the EPA recommends testing every 2 years. Always read the manufacturer's instructions to ensure the correct setup.
